The Call (1990)

I was so inspired on the occasion of the ordination of Dr Penny Jamieson, the first woman bishop of a diocese in the world, that I was moved to create a dance for her.

Leap of Faith, pg229

Susie Simpson danced The Call in a DDT programme at Allen Hall called Visions, and later in St Paul’s Cathedral, after which Bishop Penny wrote how very much moved she was.

Greening (1990)

Greening was a strong choreographic step into the 1990’s, with music by R. Vaughan Williams, including chants of the Navajo Indian, and words by W B Yeats. It is an environmental dance-drama protesting our desecration of the earth, but full of hope for its recovery and renewal; a piece which truly stands to the test of time.

Joan of Arc (1991)

Joan of Arc is a dance of three acts, The Maiden, The Soldier, The Martyr. With music Marcel Lauber, it was originally choreographed for Shona in the 1940’s.

This was first reconstruction of Shona’s performance, choreographed by Bodenwieser, on Carol Brown.

Filmed by Robert Van der Wyber.

Wild Time (1992)

This innovative piece was to music commissioned from Russell Scoones. A provocative choreography for the period, Wild Time is an absurdist work playing with Einstein’s theory of the relativity of time.

Wellspring to Isadora (1994)

Wellspring to Isadora was choreographed as part of the programme for ReSinging the Song. It is dedicated and thoroughly inspired by the life and art of the great modern dance pioneer Isadora Duncan.

After much research, I choreographed a dance in what was, I believe, a style close to that of Duncan’s herself.

The Magnificat (1995)

Created to Bach’s music, The Magnificat was performed in Christchurch Cathedral during the 1995 Christchurch Arts Festival. With Bronwyn Judge as the Madonna,

One of the most dynamic and fully energised pieces I’d made in years.

Two Inches Behind The Eyes (1995)

Inspired by the writings of Janet Frame, a quest which reflects the power of the word, and its fusion with the mind. Commissioned for Footnote NZ Tour, to a score by Anthony Ritchie, created on Raewyn Hill, and then repeated by Bronwyn Judge for Dunedin Town Hall Memorial for Janet Frame.

A Question of love (1996)
